Uniforms

The following are the uniform selections for wear on Thursday nights, and where to get them. All of the options below and the CAP distinctive uniforms are acceptable as per the CAP Uniform Manual CAPM 39-1. In all cases, both the CAPM 39-1 and SOI 39-1 are the ultimate authority on how and where to wear these uniforms. This is strictly a guide to help get you going. When in doubt or for questions, consult the regulations and then your command staff.

For wear, instructions consult CAPM 39-1 and the Squadron 50 Quick Start Uniform Guide which was designed for new cadets but has excellent and pertinent info for all members.

Golf Shirt Supplier:

Vanguardmil.com – Don’t get these anywhere else. They are official.
You can sign-up for their monthly newsletter but the best place to get a discount code is through their Facebook Page. The page offers monthly 10% discount codes that can only be used once. Sometimes they offer bigger discounts near the holidays. This will help cover at least the tax. They also offer free shipping if you spend enough. The amount seems to vary. Just know their free shipping is UPS ground and ships from Virginia so expect 5 business days for delivery. For faster, an not very much money, select USPS Priority Mail which arrives in 2-3 days. Often the discount is enough to cover this extra cost. It all depends on how fast you want your item. On average it only takes 1-2 business days for Vanguard to process orders, including personalized.

Option 1 – Navy Blue Golf Shirt w/ Screened Seal (The cheapest and minimal you need)
Option 2 – Navy Blue Golf Shirt with Embroidered Seal (These can be personalized with your name but nothing else until you get your Technician rating in your specialty track. Suggested you get this with your name on it so people start to know who you are. The Silk Screened version doesn’t offer this option)

Pants Suppliers:

Recommended – 5.11 TacLite Pro pant – Charcoal – Available at Amazon or locally at Crescent Supply in Downtown Modesto.
If you don’t want to go this route just wear “Medium Grey Pants” which is rather vague and varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Everyone else at the squadron is pretty much wearing the 5.11’s. This also supports 5.11, a local company, and Crescent if you buy them there.

Don’t forget the: Black Belt, and Black Shoes or Boots.

Field Uniforms (ABUs, Corporate Field Uniform)

CAP has two different uniforms for wear in the field. The Airman Battle Uniform (ABU) is the official US Air Force uniform allowed for wear in CAP by members who meet weight and grooming standards as discussed above. The Corporate Field Uniform (CFU) is worn by those who either don’t meet weight and grooming standards or just don’t want to wear ABU for whatever reason they want. Either uniform is acceptable provided you meet the requirements and wear it appropriately as specified in CAPM 39-1.

Where to buy… that’s an answer bigger than we can put here. ABU’s come in 50/50 Twill(winter weight) and Rip-Stop(summer weight). You are going to pretty much want to wear the rip-stop due to the high heat here in the central valley unless you get cold easily. Outwear is of course allowed during colder weather. Beware there are NFPA Compliant ABU’s on the market that you want to stay clear of. Ebay is a good source for used ones but the rip-stops are hard to find at a low price. Best source is Travis AFB. The CFU is generically described as “Dark Blue, BDU Style” which leads to people buying them from numerous sources and no one looking the same. What is “dark blue”? Navy blue? Who really knows as long as the color is dark blue. There are sources that supply police departments and other public safety agencies that sell these BDU-style uniforms. Sometimes listed as “Navy” or “LAPD” blue for the color. The choice is yours.

Below is a link on how to wear of the ABU’s, since they are new to CAP, along with other important documents such a SOI 39-1 which is our squadron’s official instructions on wear of our uniforms (an addendum to the CAPM 39-1). There are also sizing charts for ABU’s and Blues. Read through them and use them as a guide when deciding which uniform to wear and how it should be properly assembled. As stated before, uniforms are to be complete before they can be worn. As senior members we must set the example to our cadets in how we wear our uniforms properly. Field uniforms are specifically designed to be worn in a field or working environment that involves physical exertion Field uniform wear is generally restricted to CAP meeting and activities with a field or training focus. Before wearing the ABU’s, be sure to also read the Updated Wear Instructions.
